Matthew 12:43-45 NLT 43 “When an evil[a] spirit leaves a person, it goes into the desert, seeking rest but finding none. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the person I came from.’ So it returns and finds its former home empty, swept, and in order. 45 Then the spirit finds seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they all enter the person and live there. And so that person is worse off than before. That will be the experience of this evil generation.” When I asked God to reveal to me what it meant to really be in worship, He revealed to me that beyond music, it is a heart posture of viewing your life/self as a house that The Holy Spirit can inhabit and make a home. There's certain music, other media sources, and even people that are vessels for spirits that are anything but holy, and when we interact with those things or people consistently, those spirits can begin to live within us and crowd the space so much that The Holy Spirit feels like there's no room left for it. Kinda like when we invite someone for a visit, but they overstay their welcome. Or worse (God forbid), when a person invites the wrong somebody in and they find out about that person's valuables and they begin plotting to steal from them. This revelation helped me understand why worship is so often referred to as setting the atmosphere to welcome The Holy Spirit in. It's important that we ask God to help us 1. Recognize what we could be inviting in with every interaction we have in our lives, and 2. Gain/regain dominion over ourselves to make sure that the demons that try to come visit us cannot stay to live. We can't let those demons live, move, and have being through us, or even steal from us because all that will do is contribute to the forward movement of the enemy's mission, the breakdown of our relationships with God, and the disruption of our journey to becoming and being who God says we are. When we choose to evict the unwanted guests and start guarding our valuables (our hearts, eye gates, and ear gates), we are cultivating a space that is inhabitable for The Holy Spirit. And even if our individual eviction processes seem slow or inconsequential at first, we are still letting The Holy Spirit know that it is okay to start moving in so that it can live with us, clean house, and move through us as it sees fit.
